Did you spot us in the RACE annual?
RACE is the UK Atomic Energy Authority (UKAEA)’s centre for Remote Applications in Challenging Environments, and they recently published their annual newsletter.
We are thrilled to see our extensive work on the European Spallation Source (ESS) Active Cells Facility highlighted in the recent UKAEA publication. As the designers and manufacturers of this groundbreaking equipment, we’re immensely proud that our contribution to the world’s largest windowless hot cell has been recognised. Working closely with RACE, we’ve developed innovative solutions for processing irradiated waste at this powerful neutron source constructed in Sweden.
Our engineering team has meticulously designed specialised equipment for radioactive material handling, where the challenging radiation levels require almost entirely remote operations. We leveraged our extensive hot cell and process handling experience to execute this challenging project, ensuring every aspect met the stringent requirements. The diamond wire saw technology we developed with our supply chain partners successfully handles difficult materials such as “Super Duplex” whilst maintaining strict dust control requirements.
Despite facing COVID challenges, we’re delighted that factory acceptance testing succeeded, and the first test samples were successfully cut in March 2023. This represents a significant milestone in the UK’s “in-kind” contribution to a world-class scientific facility that will advance crucial research in materials, energy, health and environmental sciences.
We are proud to apply our nuclear expertise to such an important international collaboration!
