Aquila Nuclear Engineering has teamed up with Winchester City Council (WCC) to deliver football coaching for young people across the Hampshire district.

This summer has been jammed packed with great sport, with the Commonwealth Games, Ladies Euros and European Athletic Championships, to name a few. And it doesn’t stop there. The Aquila team is excited to announce that it is teaming up with Winchester City Council (WCC) and their delivery partner, ActiveMe 360 to deliver football coaching for young people across the Hampshire district.

Joe Taylor, Co-Founder and Director of Business Development at ActiveMe 360 said “ActiveMe 360 are delighted to once again be working with Winchester City Council to improve the health and wellbeing of children and young people in the Winchester District this October half term. The football project allows children to take part in high quality football at 8 venues across the district without financial barriers, which is really important in the current climate. We are grateful to Aquila for their support in making the project happen.”

Delivering positive social impact is just one of Aquila’s corporate socially responsible schemes and as a business it chose to support an initiative that would benefit a diverse pool of young people from across the local communities. Funding to WCC will enable ActiveMe 360 to deliver sport activities across the local area and support young people. Winchester City Council’s Calum Drummond, said ‘the sponsorship support allows more children and young people to take part in a wide-range of sport and physical activity programmes across the district’.

Steve Barker, Commercial Manager for Aquila Nuclear Engineering said:

“As the lead for social projects at Aquila I could not be happier with this initiative. Winchester City Council and its partners deliver some excellent programmes to our communities often with tight budgets, and we are proud to contribute to this through this new sponsorship arrangement.

The funding we are putting in place not only enables the delivery of this initiative, but it also indirectly allows the Council to reallocate resources to other great programmes and schemes that might not otherwise be possible without appropriate funding.

Football is just one of many sports that should be accessible by all, and we are confident this initiative will deliver real positive impact to the young people attending and might even inspire the next generation of a major trophy-winning football team!”

We are proud to have formed a new partnership with STEM Returners to help engineers return to the sector after a career break. Find out more below, or through our feature here: STEM Returners

“Aquila Nuclear Engineering, a Cyclife EDF group subsidiary, delivers projects across a range of domestic and international nuclear market sectors. from the design concept stage right through to manufacturing, testing, installation and commissioning.

The company will offer a pilot STEM Returners programme at their site near Winchester, Hampshire, which kicks off with the role of Senior Mechanical Design Engineer. The role will open to engineers who have struggled to return to their career through standard recruitment channels.

STEM Returners programmes act as a ‘returnship’, allowing candidates to be re-integrated into an inclusive environment upon their return to STEM.

Annual research from STEM Returners (The STEM Returners Index) has revealed the challenges engineers face when trying to return to work, following a career break. Recruitment bias is shown to be the main barrier to entry.

Natalie Desty, Director of STEM Returners said: “We are very proud to be entering this new partnership with Aquila, to return highly skilled people back into the industry they love. Only by partnering with industry leaders like Aquila, will we make vital changes in STEM recruitment practices, to help those who are finding it challenging to return to the sector and improve diversity and inclusion.”

Grace McMullan, Recruitment Advisor at Aquila, said: “At Aquila Nuclear Engineering, we strive to break down barriers and build an inclusive and diverse workforce. We support those who have taken a career break and aim to get them back into their chosen profession. We have recently formed a new partnership with STEM Returners to help Engineers get back into work, and we couldn’t be more excited.”

There is currently a well-known skills shortage in the UK engineering industry, but despite a clear need for people, professionals who have had a career break are often overlooked. STEM Returners has recently launched the 2022 STEM Returners Index to better understand STEM professionals’ experiences of trying to re-enter the sector after a career break.

The survey is open to all STEM professionals who have had a gap in their career, who are attempting to return to work, or who have recently returned to work. It is anonymous and asks a variety of questions including reasons for a career break, what challenges were faced when attempting to return to work and what impact COVID-19 had on finding a role.

The STEM Returners’ programme aims to eliminate barriers, by giving candidates real work experience and mentoring during their placement, as well as helping them to seamlessly adjust to life back in work.

Whilst the scheme helps solve the problem of sourcing talent in sectors with a shortage of skilled professionals, it also has the added benefit of increasing diversity in a host organisation. STEM Returners’ population of experienced professionals attempting to return to work are 51% female and 38% from black and minority ethnic groups, compared to 10% female and 6% BME working in the STEM industry. Successful candidates may be offered full-time positions at Aquila upon the completion of their 12-week placement. Since STEM Returners launched in 2017, nearly 250 STEM Returner candidates have joined programmes across the UK”.

The Aquila team has recently visited Owlesbury Primary School to talk to the children about STEM, presenting to the entire school from Year R up to and including Year 6.

The educational visit is just one initiative driven by the STEM group at Aquila, having already held a week of work experience earlier in the year.

Aquila’s aim was to explain about STEM; putting the topics into practical terms allowing the pupils to engage with, and most importantly, get them excited about STEM subjects. One of the best ways to demonstrate the value of STEM subjects is to draw on the enthusiasm and expertise of people who use STEM every day in their work and so Aquila’s three enthusiastic team members explained a bit more about how STEM is applied in their roles, from engineering and project management, to the the commercial team.

Using year group-specific tasks, and following the presentation, the pupils spent the afternoon in small teams building towers out of materials Aquila had brought along.

Catriona Simpson, Bid Manager, Aquila Nuclear Engineering, said:

“We wanted to see how creative the pupils could be; the brief for each group was slightly different but all had a clear objective. We also added an element of competition to the task for a little extra motivation.

The younger pupils were tasked with making a tower out of spaghetti and plasticine; their objective was to make the tallest tower in their group. The remaining pupils, from Year 3 upwards, had different materials and had the objective of making the tallest tower. However, they were also tasked with ensuring their structure was strong enough to support the weight of an item, and we asked them to think about how the structure would hold the item, for example a hook or platform.

We were so impressed with all the pupils and the energy and creativity they displayed. They all showed great resilience, as in many cases their first idea didn’t work the way they imagined so they needed to change their designs.  And, so importantly, they all worked together in their teams with everyone having an important role and sharing their ideas.”

The afternoon was certainly enjoyed by the Aquila team, the pupils and the teachers alike, and Aquila hopes to have inspired the pupils to keep working on their STEM subjects.

Aquila Nuclear Engineering has been selected by the Sellafield Programme and Project Partners (PPP) to support the design and build of replacement nuclear laboratories.

Under an eight-year framework contract with an estimated value of £9 million, Aquila and its sub-contractor Jacobs will collaboratively modify and integrate complex, high-precision analytical equipment into gloveboxes and shielded hot cells as part of the Replacement Analytical Project (RAP).

Working together, they will combine Aquila’s extensive experience of designing, modifying and installing shielded equipment for the nuclear industry with Jacobs’ fundamental knowledge and operational experience of sensors and instrumentation for high-precision chemical and radiochemical analysis.

“We are delighted to have won this long term contract which not only allows us to provide high level engineering skills from the Aquila pool but also creates a platform to invest in our younger engineers joining the business and establish a presence in West Cumbria,” said Dave Barker, CEO of Aquila Nuclear Engineering.

“This appointment gives us the opportunity to combine complementary skills in chemistry, advanced instrumentation, engineering and nuclear shielding to deliver a world-class analytical solution which will play a vital role in Sellafield Ltd’s mission to create a clean and safe environment for future generations,” said Greg Willetts, Vice President for Technology and Cyber Solutions, Jacobs Critical Mission Solutions International.

RAP is one of several major projects which are considered essential for the environmental clean-up of Sellafield, the most complex nuclear site in the UK. It involves works to modify the on-site National Nuclear Laboratory Central Laboratory facility to incorporate new analytical testing to support site operational missions over the next 30 years by analysing low, medium and high active material on behalf of 200 internal customers.

The project is being delivered by PPP, which was set up by Sellafield Ltd to deliver major projects and site wide project delivery improvements over the next 20 years.
